We generally go to CRUFTS every year, sometimes multiple days. We will find some opportunity to represent our breed, or to show off Bonnie's skills.
Our first year together we were in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme ring, demonstrating how to work with a puppy and make early training the most fun, light and rewarding experience.
Cufts is where I met Bonnie's breed, at the Discover Dogs stand. I was facing losing my first dog Huxley, the dog that ignited my passion for learning about animals and the way that they behave, and I saw a Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer from afar, with no idea what they were, and just gravitated towards this calm (probably exhausted) dog. His name was Boris and he had his friend there, a smooth Slovak much like Bonnie, called Mika. I was instantly besotted.
Crufts for us is a special moment every year where I appreciate everything dog. I am in awe of the ways that the dogs all show themselves off, how receptive so many of the owners are to their dogs needs, and how everyone comes together with a common objective and love for these animals.
To represent our breed at Discover Dogs means so much because it means I can give back to my breed, and help people who's shoes I was once in. Worried about making the right choice of dog, scared of making a decision and generally overwhelmed by all the choices.
Bonnie copes incredibly well when we go to Crufts. She's a very active dog, a day on the lead for her is her worst nightmare. But for some reason Crufts is a bit different. She gets a bit overwhelmed by all the people but only when the crowds are massive. She curls up and waits for people to approach and stroke her. She gives kisses and licks to those that want them, and greets many like old friends. It's a time of year that just brings me so much joy and pride at how far my girly and I have come together.
